Built Your Own PC: A Step By Step Guide

Now it's time to hook up the ATX power connector to the motherboard. The connector only goes in one way. There's a clip that will hold it in place. If by some wild way you get it in backwards, your computer will blow up (I'm not kidding either).

Connect the power to all the drives. Again they only go in one way. You really can't get this mixed up as there is a notch on the connectors that matches the notch on the drives. It won't go in upside down. If you somehow manage to get it in upside down, you can kiss your drives good bye when you power up.

Now hook up the IDE and floppy cable. Look for the pin 1 and hook it to the pin 1 of the drive connectors. Most new IDE cable has a notch on the connector so you can not put it in backwards. If you do put it in backwards, it won't kill your drives. Your system will just not boot. For this setup, I hook the floppy cable to the floppy drive, the IDE cable connects to IDE port 1 and hooks up the hard drive (master) and DVD drive (slave)
