So What Model Palm Do I Buy?
Rather than lapse into a giant paragraph comparing all
the models Palm is currently offering, I'm going to just list them, one by one,
in order of their cost, describe what's up with them, and let you decide. So
without further ado...
The Palm m100
Please Don't Buy Me. I'm not worthy of your Love.
Cost: $149
Size: 4.66'' x 3.12'' x .72''
Weight: 4.4oz
OS: PalmOS 3.5 (Non-Upgradeable)
RAM: 2mb
Intended For: People With No Taste, Blind People, People Who Buy
Cars/Computers Based on Color.
Ah, the m100. At first when I saw it, I
thought it was a little kid's toy. Then, when I studied it more closely, I
determined that it was a little kid's toy. This is simply the Palm IIIe
(reviewed below) with a funky case design and a new version of the PalmOS. Just
like the IIIe, it has a meager 2mb of memory, which is barley enough for AvantGo
(with about 10 websites) and the game SimCity combined, let alone any contacts
or datebook entries. The device has no Flash ROM, which means you're locked in
with PalmOS 3.5. Hope you enjoy it.
The m100's only claim to fame? Ugly design
and changeable faceplates. Oooh, do I want aqua or honeysuckle? Choices,
Choices.
Do yourself a favor. If you're going to go
for a Palm on the cheap, get a IIIe. At least then you won't have elementary
school students trying to steal it from you.
The Palm IIIe
The Ford Escort of PDAs.
Cost: $149
Size: 4.7'' x 3.2'' x .7''
Weight: 6oz
OS: PalmOS 3.1.1 (Non-Upgradeable)
RAM: 2mb
Intended For: Skinflint PDA Buyers, People who don't run programs on
their PDAs, Students.
This is Palm's original entry-level PDA,
and it shows. I own one, because I was too cheap to get a IIIxe and I regret
it. The Palm IIIe would be perfect for someone that just wants to put the
standard organizer things, such as phone numbers and addresses, into their PDA.
Once you start adding programs though, you realize that the paltry 2mb of RAM
isn't going to cut it.
Like I said in my review of the m100, just
AvantGo with some webpages and the game SimCity can easily take nearly all of
your RAM, leaving you in the bad position of having to decide what program to
delete so you can add some phone numbers.
The PalmOS version isn't upgradeable,
thanks to a lack of a Flash ROM. This means I'm going to be locked into OS
version 3.1.1 forever...or until I get a IIIxe.
Only buy this PDA if you don't intend to
download more than one or two programs, and you don't mind staying with 1999's
PalmOS version for as long as you own the unit.
