The Palm Buyer's Guide

The Palm IIIxe

This is the PDA to buy.

Cost: $249
Size: 4.7'' x 3.2'' x .7''
Weight: 6oz
OS: PalmOS 3.5 (Upgradeable through Flash ROM)
RAM: 8mb
Intended For: People who demand a lot from their PDA.  Memory Lovers, Hardcore Users, People who need room for a million contact list entries.

This is the PDA to own.  Palm has packed so much PDA goodness into this small package you should never need anything more.  There's 8mb of RAM.  This alone would make it worth the $250 retail price.  You can easily fit tons of programs into this space, along with e-books, which are simply books in digital form for you to read on trips.  This PDA also has a Flash ROM so you can always upgrade to Palm's next OS.

This PDA also includes the internal expansion port in case you should ever need any more RAM, or something else that comes down the pipe, like a pager addon.

Enough good things cannot be said about this device, it's simply the best anyone can get.  Sure, Palm has several other models out, some more expensive by far, but if you don't need  a flashy aluminum case or a built in modem, than the IIIxe is perfect for you.

Run out and buy this now, you won't be disappointed.

The Palm IIIc

8-bit color Lovin'

Cost: $399
Size: 5.06'' x 3.17'' x .67''
Weight: 6.8oz
OS: PalmOS 3.5 (Upgradeable Through Flash ROM)
RAM: 8mb
Intended For: People that will pay $150 more than the IIIxe for a chintzy color screen.

Palm finally stopped oozing their mantra that a Color screen couldn't be added and still keep the popular Palm size, speed, and battery life and churned out the IIIc, probably to try to shut up Windows CE fanatics.

The extra $150 isn't worth it. The device has a built in Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery to keep people from having to buy more AAA batteries every week, and most websites have found that the battery will generally last a week before needing a recharge, which it will do automatically when placed in the cradle.

The IIIc also has the same 8mb of RAM the IIIxe does, so you can be sure to store all sorts of pornograp-err, I mean, Mission Critical JPEG files that need intense review.  Of course.

The display also only uses 256 colors, a scheme this reviewer thought ended with his 486-class computer with onboard Cirrus Logic video back in '93.

If the IIIc only cost $50 more than the IIIxe, I'd say go for it, but for $400 dollars, which is infringing on PocketPC territory, the IIIc just isn't worth it.
