The Palm Buyer's Guide

The Palm V

The Palm IIIe with the shiny case.

The Price: $329
Size: 4.5'' x 3.1'' x .04''
Weight: 4oz
OS: PalmOS 3.0 (Upgradeable)
RAM: 2mb
Intended For: People who will pay $180 more than a Palm IIIe for a shiny case, men with a case of penis envy.

There's no reason to buy this Palm.  None.  My Palm IIIe can do everything this can, for $180 less.  What does your extra $180 buy you?  A shiny case and rechargeable battery.  Oh, and a case that flares out at the bottom like bell-bottom jeans just so it wont fit in your hand well.

I can buy a set of rechargeable batteries for my Palm IIIe, and spray paint it silver, and tape some wedges to the bottom and get my very own Palm V, but I don't think I will.

The only saving grace for the Palm V is that it has a Flash ROM so the OS can be updated.  There, that's the only thing that's really better about this model, and I don't think I would pay $180 for it.  The Palm V series lacks the internal expansion of the III series though, another fault.

Of course, if you have an eye for shiny objects...

The Palm Vx

Sucks a bit less than the Palm V

Cost: $399
Size: 4.5'' x 3.1'' x .04''
Weight: 4oz
OS: PalmOS 3.5 (Upgradeable)
RAM: 8mb
Intended For: People attracted to bright, shiny things, People who would take 8mb of RAM over the wireless modem in the Palm VII.

This model sucks a little less than the Palm V, because it has a beefy 8mb of RAM, but still no internal expansion module. You're still paying a premium because the V series is "stylish," but at least with the Vx you're getting a bit more, but it's still not enough for my tastes.

For $399 you could also get the Palm VII, which has only 2mb of RAM but a nifty wireless modem, but I'd still just get a IIIxe, it may not be "stylish" but the price Palm wants for it is sane.
