Being a woman in a male dominated industry is
always a difficult task, but from personal experience, it seems to
be exceptionally hard in the fields of technology and computer
information. For decades, women have been fighting for equal
rights and the ability to do jobs that men commonly do. Now, it
isn't uncommon to see women in warehouses, driving heavy
machinery, working in an office, or even in operating rooms. With
the advent of the dawning technological era, however, another
field has become open for women to explore.
Being a part of a game development team
myself, I work with a male-dominated team on a daily basis. There
is only one other woman on our staff, an exceptionally talented 2D
artist, aside from myself, making the female influence amongst the
team rather minimal in comparison to everyone else. Thankfully, we
work in an environment that is quite favorable for us; the men we
work with have no qualms with working with us. Unfortunately, this
often doesn't extend beyond our own team.
Much of my work exists
in the realm of public relations, and on a daily basis I am
confronted with at least one man that either a) doesn't believe
me, or b) refuses to take me seriously. These men range from
so-called professional contacts to potential fans to just people I
happen to meet on a daily basis. This is just one facet of a
custom that has been etched into society for hundreds of years, a
custom that most women despise and fight to overcome: the
subservience of the female gender and intellectual dominance of
males.
