Global Win FDP32 to Abit BP6

After the CPU’s were fully wrapped up I taped a piece of 220 grit (rough side up) to the flattest surface in my house.  I basically followed the directions at AGN (I actually printed them out).  You sand in figure 8 shapes. I did little figure 8’s starting on one side until the paper wasn’t grabbing as much, then moved over to a fresh spot on the paper.  You gotta do the first lap until it’s all copper.  You’ll probably think at this point “Why did Intel do it like this, why not leave it copper?”. Then you’ll probably do the other CPU.

Don't stop lapping till you see copper.

After that go through the next grits fairly quickly, maybe 5 minutes each.  I noticed there was still copper coming off all the way to 1500 grit. Also make sure you wipe the slug down when you switch grits.  Also I think you should wipe the paper down too once and a while. Keep the paper wet too.

When you’ve done this to both CPU’s, clean them with a damp cloth and touch them to your case so that you discharge any static before you take the electrical tape off.  Take the tape off and touch the foam to your case before you clean the CPU’s again.  I use Cutex because it’s a really good cleaner but if I smoked I probably wouldn’t use it because it’s almost pure acetone.

Beautiful, isn't it? :)

For fun I rubbed the 1500 grit on the bottom of the heatsinks but nothing came off, they’re pretty smooth already. Pop your CPU’s in their sockets. Because everything is so tight you can’t apply the thermal grease the normal way, which for me is to put a bit on and rub it around with the heatsink.  So instead you have to be really careful to put just a 0.01” layer on (just kidding).  Seriously, put very little on.

What to Expect

Originally I had the Retail Boxed fans and at 550Mhz 2.0v the processors temperature was 10 degrees Celsius higher than the case temp.  After these modifications the processors are within 1 to 3 degrees of the case temp, even at full load!! Brag about that at the next LAN party. :-)

FINAL NOTE - The day after doing all this Andrew over at AMK Services call Moto and told him that Global Win just released the new FEP32, which is a FDP32 with the 2 fins hacked off already. It will fit an Abit BP6 with out any mods. This should save you the hacking part.
