What you need
Here's a basic summary of what hardware you're going to need: a Host Adapter, 2 to 3 SCSI cables (or more), A RAID Controller (optional), External Terminators (maybe), and of course your SCSI drives and peripherals.

The Host Adapter
This is also known as a SCSI controller. A SCSI controller is a PCI card (older ones are ISA) that will control all your SCSI hardware. They have connectors for different cables. The two brands I suggest are either the Tekram or the Adaptec. I would suggest using the Adaptec if your running any type of serious server. The Tekrams cost half as much and perform the same, but are less supportive by the manufacturer. Adaptec is also more well known.

The Tekram 390F is an Ultra Wide adapter. It has one 50 pin external connector, and one 50 pin internal connector, and one 68 pin ultra-wide connector.

The Tekram 390-U2B is an Ultra-2 Wide adapter. It has one 68 pin LVD external connector, one 50 pin internal connector, and one internal 68 pin Ultra-2 LVD connector. Note if you mix ultra-wide with ultra-2 wide devices, you limit yourself to 40MB/s.

The Tekram 390-U2W is also an Ultra-2 adapter. It has one 68 pin LVD external connector, one 50 pin internal connector, one 68 pin internal ultra-wide connector, and one internal 68 pin ultra-2 wide connector.

The Adaptec 2940UW is an Ultra Wide adapter which has one 50 pin internal connector, one 68 pin connector, and 1 external 50 pin connector.

The Adaptec 2930U2 is an Ultra-2 Wide adapter supporting 1 Ultra-2 Wide LVD drive, it has one 50 pin internal connector, one 50 pin external connector, and one 68 pin ultra-2 LVD connector.

The Adaptec 2940U2W is an Ultra-2 Wide adapter which supports upto 15 LVD drives. It has the same connectors as the Tekram 390-U2W.

The Adaptec 3950U2 is the dual Ultra-2 adapter which supports up to 30 devices.
