The
different types of SCSI
SCSI-1
Obsolete by today's standards but are still found in some
devices such as scanners and external zip drives. These devices are 25 pin. To
connect a SCSI-1 device to your SCSI card, you will need an external 25 to 50
pin cable. When using external devices, you cannot use one of the internal
connectors on your SCSI controller. In other words, one of the internal
connectors have to remain unused.
SCSI-2
A 50 pin connector which supports a maximum bus rate of 10MB/s. These are used
by tape drives, CD-ROM drives, and older hard drives.
Ultra Wide SCSI (UW)
A 68 pin connector which is D-shaped that supports up to
40MB/sec. Used mostly by hard drives, although Plextor has an UW CD-ROM drive.
SCSI-3 (68 pin, Ultra2 SCSI, including LVD)
A 68 pin connector which supports up to 80MB/s. Strictly
used by Hard drives.
You may not need any terminator if your drives support
termination. Note: Some LVD drives requires an external terminator. Also, LVD
hard drives will not work with an UW controller without the proper jumper
settings.
