How To Rip Apart An Athlon

Now it's time to remove the heat transfer plate. This part of the operation is the most dangerous and you should be VERY VERY CAREFUL. One wrong move and you could be kissing your brand new Athlon good bye.

The Athlon is held to the heat transfer plate by 2 metal straps attached to the 4 inside pins. You will need needle nose pliers to remove them. Just go nice and slow here and try not to touch any of the electronics with the pliers.

You may want to do this with a piece of paper under the pliers to be extra safe. You need to pull that strap off the pin with the needle nose. If you don't have steady hands, it's best to let a friend do this part. You can blame him if the CPU dies. :-)

One strap out, one more to go! As you can see, I had to bend the strap pretty good to remove it. After the first strap is removed, the second one is pretty easy to do because there is more space under the strap to work with.

This is what you get after it's all done. At this point you may need a good stiff drink.
