How To Start a Tech Site

Getting traffic

The easiest way to get people to come to your site is by sending out a news release. The release should be about a review or article you've done. Most news sites don't post a site launching. I get many emails from webmasters who tell me they have started a new site and then ask if I could post about it in my news page. Unless you're a really good friend of mine, you're not going to get a plug. However, send me an email saying you've started a new site and have posted a review of something new and chances are very good that your article will be in the main news page.

I like to send out my news releases so the webmaster of the sites I'm sending it to has to do as little work as possible to post it. I word it so all they need to do is cut and paste it to their news server. Here is an example of a news release I sent out to promote my Plextor giveaway:

The Plextor PlexWriter 8/4/32 CD Writer is one of the best CD Writers on the market. Whether you want to just back up your data or create your own music CD, the Plextor PlexWriter 8/4/32 can get the job done. What could be better? How about getting a brand new one free? Well, The Tech Zone is giving away a PlexWriter 8/4/32! Find out all the contest details here.

A news post would be most welcome.

Thank you

The webmaster receiving this release could simply cut and paste it to his news or he can add his own little spin on it. I notice that Kyle at HardOCP likes to spin my news release a lot :).

There are many many sites on the net that will post your news. However, you will get your biggest traffic boost if your news is posted by these three:

Besides Maximum PC, the above three sites has sent The Tech Zone more traffic than any others. If you can get VE, Anand and Blues to post your news, you will see a huge surge in traffic. How do you get them to post your news? Well, your news has to be news! There is very little chance that Billy at Voodoo Extreme is going to post about your review of last year's video card.

Another site which can send you an amazing amount of traffic is slashdot.  However, your news has to be really unique. They have only posted one article out of the hundreds I've sent them but when they did post it, they sent me 5,000 people in two hours and nearly killed my server! It is the goal of every webmaster to be "Slashdotted".

In addition to news releases, the next thing you have to take care of is search engines. Search engines are my biggest referrers after bookmarks and Maximum PC. If you're not getting any traffic from search engine you better figure out how to fix your search engine META tags so you do.
