Getting listed on search engines
The key to search engine success is the META Tag. Meta Tags are used as part
of your HTML code. Search engines that sends out "Spiders" use the information
contained within META Tags to index your Web page. In most cases a Spider will
grab only the first few words, sentences or paragraphs and use those words as
the description and keywords for your Web page. META Tags on the other hand tell
the Spider what information to use.
When properly constructed you can actually control how these robots display
your Web page in their search engines. I'm sure you have used a search engine in
the past and found the description to be anything but informative. With META
Tags you can have the robot display your Web page description the way you want
it displayed (within reason of course). You can also help people find your Web
page by providing keywords that describe your page and help drive traffic to
your Web site.
I use the
META
Tag Analyzer available at Scrub The Web. It's a great tool to help you setup
your meta tags so search engines will put you higher up in the rankings.
There are really only two stats I keep track of, bookmarks and
search engine hits. Your bookmarks is your reader base. Search engines bring in
the new readers. As long as both keep increasing, you're on your way. It works
something like this; Someone does a search for a piece of hardware and finds
your site because you setup your meta tags so it shows up high in the search
results. The visitor comes to your site and likes what he/she reads and
bookmarks your site.
While the META Tag Analyzer can help you place higher on most
search engine, it doesn't work on
Yahoo. This is because Yahoo is a directory and doesn't use spiders. A
listing on Yahoo can bring you more traffic than any other search engine if you
do it right. This is where having a name beginning with a number can help as
Yahoo list numbers first.
Calling your site 1 Big Tech Site will mean you are listed at
the top of Yahoo's list of computer sites. Being listed among the top 10 is very
important as most people won't look below that. When you consider that Yahoo
gets over 2 million users PER DAY, you can imagine how much traffic the world's
biggest web site can send you if your site is listed number one.
Alright what if you're call Z hardware or in my case, The Tech
Zone? You would be listed pretty low in the Yahoo directory and won't get
anywhere near the hits a top listing will give you. How do you get a top listing
in this case? This is sneaky, but you can always register a new domain name
like 1AllTech.com and have that forward to your site and submit 1AllTech.com to
Yahoo, he he he..... Hmmm, I shouldn't have told anyone this one. I can see a
bunch of tech sites with a 1 in front of it now. :)
One last thing you can do is exchange links with other sites.
The Tech Zone has a links page
where we post other site links as long as they link to us.
