How To Remove A P3 heatsink

cpu.jpg (12942 bytes)

Like I said in the last page, the heatsink of the Pentium 3 is held in place by 4 pins attached to 2 clips. To remove these pins, you only need 2 things:

  • One case screw

  • One screwdriver.

The case screws fits perfectly into those pin holes on the back plate of the Pentium 3. If you push the case screw into the hole, it will pop out the pin without breaking it.

Start by removing the fan cover off the heatsink. This is very easy to do and doesn't require any tools. Just apply some pressure on the little tabs on either ends of the fan housing and the unit will come off.

Now place the case screw flat on your work surface (sorry for the bad photos). Line up the first pin hole with the case screw and push down into the screw. Out pops the first pin!

Take your screwdriver and unscrew the case screw from the pin hole. If the case screw you use is thinner than the case screw I used, then you may not even need a screwdriver to take it out.

Repeat the process with the other 3 pin holes and voila! You can remove the UNBROKEN pin clips! Once the pin clips are out, the heatsink comes right off.

If you wish to remove the back plate, then you will have to break 2 tabs used to hold the back plate to the CPU. Most aftermarket heatsink makes use of the back plate so you may not want to remove it. I removed the back plate because it traps heat.

Here is what you end up with after you finish (I forgot to include the fan housing in the photo). This is the Pentium III processor that will be used for Project 620.

You are now free to put on a REAL heatsink on your Pentium III processor and overclock to your heart's content. :-)
