Project 620: Case Cooling 301

case1.jpg (64095 bytes)

One of the most important things to do for proper airflow is to make sure nothing blocks off the airflow inside the case. Having a million fans in your comp will not help you If things are blocking them off. All cables and wires inside Project 620 were Zip Tied down against the sliding motherboard tray to make sure they don't block off the fans' airflow.

The IDE cables were carefully folded flat against the motherboard and Zip Tied down. Nothing blocks off any fans in the system. Those of you familiar with the In Win Q500 case will note that there is a hard drive cage missing in the above photo. This is because I had to remove it to install the 4.75" fan.

Well, I didn't really have to remove the hard drive cage. I had to relocate the speaker and I couldn't think of any place to mount it so I removed the hard drive cage and mounted the speaker up there. Besides, it looks cleaner without the hard drive cage.

The hard drive itself is mounted at the very top of the In Win case, above the fan that is above the power supply. The In Win Q500 has a special hard drive mount there. The hard drive cage did not go to waste. I cut it up into a bunch of small rectangles. They make great L2 cache spacers for the Pentium III. :-)

The last thing I did was to tape up all case openings. I wanted to make sure that air only comes in through the intake fans and go out through the exhaust fans. This meant taping up any and all holes that's in the case.

The bottom line of all this cooling madness. 80F at 620Mhz. Just 8F above room temp. The system has never once went over 82F, no matter what I throw at it.
