Project 620: Removing The Ultra Cooler

The Viper V770 Ultra has a heatsink and fan to help
cool it. This stock cooler was fine for running at stock speed but I wanted to go much
higher.
At first I was going to replace the stock cooler with a
TennMax Lasagna cooler. Then I remember that the Lasagna cooler in my old Viper 550
couldn't outperform the stock Viper 550 heatsink with a fan on it. So I decided to do
something a little different.

The first thing to do is to remove the stock Viper
cooler. I took a printer's ink knife and pop off the Viper's cooler. The ink knife fits
perfectly between the heatsink and card. Just slide it in there and pull up. The cooler
will pop right off. If you don't have an ink knife, you can use a butter knife.
A word of warning: If you remove the
factory heatsink you will lose the warranty, so make sure you can live without it first.

The "glue" left on the chipset can be
softened with carburetor cleaner (key ingredients are Toluene, MEK,
Xylene). Use a razor to shave the thick glue off the chip. Rub the chip clean with a
cloth saturated with carburetor cleaner. Then finish off by wiping the chip with rubbing
alcohol (70% isopropyl alcohol). This ensures removal of slow evaporating solvents
such as Naphtha, commonly included in the carburetor cleaner.
