Project 850

Project 850 is more than just a fast computer. It's a multi-media
tour du force. Not only can it run any computer games on the market, it can also play all
the latest DVD movies with full Dolby 5.1 surround sound.
I can't believe it's was only a year ago that this site was call
Moto's Project 504. I always had a special place for Project 504. It was the first
computer that I've built with my own hands. Project 504 has always been a work in progress
and it will continue to be as long as I'm around. Project 504 became Project 527, then
Project 560, then Project 620 and now it's Project 850.
Like all Tech Zone computer projects, this system is
fast. You expect that with an 850Mhz computer that has a GeForce 256 DDR running at
160/360. No production class computer can match it in games at this time. Project 850 is a
system that anyone can build. It doesn't involve peltiers, liquid cooling or any other
exotic super cooling stuff. If you're good with a screwdriver, you can build Project 850.
Project 850 is a little different than previous Tech
Zone projects. For one thing, the budget for the project was tossed out the window. All
previous Tech Zone projects had a cap on spending of about $1,800. Just the monitor and
surround sound system in Project 850 cost nearly that much. This doesn't mean the project
is expensive. You can always sub some of the equipment I used for less expensive ones.
Like all Tech Zone projects, there is the standard
warning; Project 850 deals with overclocking. Overclocking is running your CPU beyond its
intended speed set by the manufacturer. If you blow up your computer while trying to do
this, don't blame me! I also can't guarantee that your CPU will run as fast as mine.
