Project 850

Project 850 is made up of the following components:
Total cost of equipment as of April 9th, 2000 was a bit
over $3000 US. That's quite a bit to pay for a computer but it's not out of this world.
You can save yourself $1,200 by not going with the Sony monitor. The multi-media system
was what added the extra cost. I wanted the system for more than just games. I wanted to
be able to watch DVD movies as well. That meant getting a big 21" monitor and
surround sound speakers with a center channel and a Dolby 5.1 processor.
You will note that Project 850 doesn't have a modem.
This is because the system is part of The Tech Zone LAN and connects to the internet with
the network card using another host computer. See the "Sharing The Net" for
more details.
The video card of choice for Project 850 is still made
with a nVidia chipset. For the pass year, nVidia has been the company to beat when it
comes to blazing fast 3D graphics. The choice of using the Asus 6800 was pretty easy to
make. It uses the nVidia GeForce 256 chipset and most important, it has no compatibility
problems with the Asus K7M motherboard.
An Intel CPU wasn't used for this latest Tech Zone
project. Instead, Project 850 makes use of an Athlon 500 overclocked to a blazing 850Mhz.
This was done without the use of peltiers or water cooling. More on that next.
