Lets just go ahead and talk about it
just throw it out
there on the table and discuss it. Addiction. Not to drugs or alcohol and not to that gorgeous
hunk of a man David James Elliot from the television show J.A.G. who melts my butter and
makes me weak in the knees
that Harmon Rabb fellow who just
*wiping brow*
.whew,
sorry, I got distracted. Okay, back to the
subject of Internet addiction.
Will anyone admit it? That
you are truly addicted to the Internet? Spending
countless hours playing online games, lurking around chat rooms, or checking your e-mail
every 35.4 seconds
just to be sure? If
so, then you are among a growing number of people who find it more than difficult to be
away from their computers for long periods of time
say, five minutes or more. There are, of course, variations to Internet
addiction and exactly what you might be addicted to.
The Center
for On-Line Addiction (COLA) discusses some of these and ways to treat these types of
addiction:
Cybersexual Addiction (addictions to
adult chat rooms or cyberporn), to which Im sure none of you would be able to even
slightly relate (I can hope, but I know better).
Cyber-relationship Addiction (online friendships made in chat
rooms, MUDs, or newsgroups that replace real-life friends and family. This includes Cyber
affairs.). Really, Moto, this torrid affaire
damour must end. ;)
Net Compulsions (compulsive online gambling, online auction
addiction, and obsessive online trading). For
example, stop bidding on so much Elvis memorabilia.
Information Overload (compulsive web surfing or database searches). This is something Ive experienced in trying
to research information for my final oral presentation for graduate school (if youre
thinking of anything beyond my giving a 20-minute presentation for my English professors,
please refer to addiction 1).
This site also discusses Computer Addiction in general, which
involves obsessive computer game-playing (ahem
) and programming aspects of computer
science.
