Hello, my name is...

How can you tell if you are addicted?    The following questions from the site should help you find out your status:

  1. Do you feel preoccupied with the Internet?  For instance having to go back to The Techzone every few minutes to make sure you haven’t missed anything?  Wait, that’s a good thing.  Okay, nix this example.  Let’s see…like, perhaps, looking at any other technical sites, that could never possibly compare to The Techzone?

  2. Do you feel the need to use the Internet with increasing amounts of time in order to achieve satisfaction (please do not refer to Addiction 1 here).

  3. Do you stay on-line longer than originally intended?  (You haven’t missed work again, have you?)

  4. Have you jeopardized or risked the loss of a significant relationship, job, educational, or career opportunity because of the Internet?  In other words, did you tell the company you could not take the promotion, because it would interfere with quality time between you and Cassandra (a little nickname for your PC)?

Another place to determine your level of Internet addiction is at this site.    Of course, the title of the article is:     “Addicted to Your Computer?    Take Our Online Quiz to Find Out.”    Now, this could be seen as an enabling tool to those who are addicts by having them complete a quiz on the very thing the article argues against using too much.    On the other hand, it could be seen as a way to educate those who are going to be online anyway.  This is a very interesting article and quiz, so if you have any questions about your level of Internet use, please take a look.

Joking aside, Internet addiction is a very legitimate issue and should be treated as such.  I hope that if you visit these sites and find that you could be categorized as an I-addict, that you will figure out some ways to curb your cyber appetite.

If you have any questions on this article, please feel free to.......uhhhhh...hop online and email me? :)

Associate Editor Tammy "Tech Babe" Callaway was first runner-up in the Miss Alabama Pageant in 1993. She has  written and published a book on three easy steps for students to follow in order to get into the college of their choice AND have someone else pay for it. She also corresponds regularly with former President George Bush on foreign diplomacy issues.

Now if you believe all that, I have a wall in China to sell you. :-) She does hold a degree in Communications, and is, currently, taking courses toward her Master's Degree in Literature however. You can visit Tammy's home page right here. Emails to Tammy should be sent to techbabe@thetechzone.com
