Finding a "Tech" Job

Written: 7/12/99
Written By: Tammy "Tech Babe" Callaway

Oh, come on.  Everyone does it.  Just a little peek?  It won’t hurt anything.  You know you want to.  Go ahead.  Here, I will even get you started:  www.monster.com. See anything you like?  You just might if you check out this monstrous site for finding  employment.

Monster.com is just one of many, many, many, many, many (am I making my point here?) many sites available to search for jobs, whether you are unemployed, unhappy with your current position, or just looking to see what is out there.  After all, everyone is interested in new opportunities, more money, advancement, more money, ensuring they are still marketable, and….let’s see….oh yes, more money.

Technology has changed the way we do everything from investing to shopping.  It has also changed the way we look for work.  New graduates and some alumni look to university career offices.  Others look to newspapers; however, if you are looking in several different geographic areas, you must purchase newspapers from them all.  Of course, there is always the library, but information there is not always as up-to-date as say…the Internet.  What an age in which we live when, at the touch of a button, you can find available jobs in San Diego from your home in Alabama.  And believe me, you can find anything.

When I first began searching different sites to see what they had to offer, I ran across the general employment site of Yahoo! Employment (employment.yahoo.com).  There you can search for anything from internships to high tech jobs (hint, hint); perform research on companies; look at salaries and benefits; and get advice on interviews, resumes, and negotiating.  I decided to perform a job search, which you can easily do by selecting certain Locations, Job Functions, or specific Companies.  I selected Alabama as my location, and, from the pull-down menu of functions, I chose ‘creative’.     I figured that since I enjoy writing, there might be something there worth my time.  There were some interesting postings for technical writers, ad-agency writers, consultants, and photographers.  There was also a posting for the ever popular position of adult film actress.  Tempting as it was (pppffff), I decided to leave that to a seasoned professional and  moved on to see what types of technical positions might be found on the web.

At www.computerwork.com, you ‘techies’ can be duly satiated by finding positions ranging from Engineer, PC Specialist, and Programmer to Systems Analyst, Technical Writer, and Web Developer.  Unfortunately, however, there are no adult film actor positions listed here.  For that, you need to be creative on a totally different scale.  On a more positive note, one of the really nice thing about this site, as on many others, is that you can post your resume for potential employers to view.  This should save you some time and money—no printing a lot of resumes and attaching stamp after stamp.     Just a few minutes to copy and paste your resume so that hundreds of employers can see your dazzling skills and qualifications.

Know a little about C++?     Then you should check out www.cplusplusjobs.com.  It provides information on….uuhhhh….C++ positions (that wasn’t a big leap was it?).  It also advertises jobs that utilize PowerBuilder, COBOL, and Java/HTML.

The following sites are ones that I was able to access in my search for other technical positions.  They are only to get you started.  I mean, I can’t spoon-feed you, can I?  ;)

www.developers.net

www.nationjob.com

www.jobs-online.net

www.1-jobs.com

Okay, it is time for me to poof on out of here.  There was a job I wanted to apply for myself.  Let’s see……Name: Chesty LaRue…. oops, thought you were gone.  Let’s see if I can’t get this thing to work right, this time.     Ready…set…*POOF*

(oh, c’mon!     I was only joking!)   ;)
