v770-standard.jpg (23255 bytes)I have in front of me two TNT2 video cards. Both are Viper V770s. They are identical in every way except one V770 has 32 megs of ram and the other has 16 megs of ram.

Which Viper V770 is better? Is the extra 16 megs of ram in the 32 meg V770 really worth the extra money? That's what we're going to find out in this 16 megs Vs 32 megs comparison.

I took the two Viper V770s and ran some 3D Mark 99 Max and Quake 2 timedemo benchmarks. And since the new Quake 3 test has the timedemo working I ran some Quake 3 test benchmarks too. The results were very interesting to say the least.

I also overclocked both cards to see if one can overclock higher than the other. After all the benchmarking was done I sat down and played some real games with the cards to see if I could "feel" a difference. The bottom line was I really couldn't in most situations. If you were to sit me down and tell me the computer has either the 16 or 32 meg card and ask me which card was in the computer by playing a few games, I wouldn't be able to tell ya.

Price wise, you can get a 16 meg Viper V770 for as low as $119. This is a nice savings over the $199 that the 32 meg V770 sells for. If the extra 16 megs of ram doesn't make a performance improvement than why pay extra for it? That $80 savings can be better spent some where else. Like a nice dinner for 2 with your wife or girlfriend (not both at the same time however :-)).
