Today we will be taking a look at ATI's Radeon 9800 Pro, a
powerful card that may not be getting as much attention as it deserves due to
the 9800XT. Now-a-days people only seem to talk about two classifications of
graphic cards, bargain and flagship. The bargain card being the ever popular
Radeon 9600XT, which retails for $200, seems to be the most recommended card to
people looking to upgrade from their old Geforce 4 and for an affordable price.
The problem with bargain cards is they will have a very tough time dealing with
future games like Doom ]|[. If you plan on playing only current games
then $200 9600XT would definitely be the best option for you, but if you're like
most people, not playing Doom ]|[ at settings to make you drool simply isn't an option.
At the other
end of the spectrum is the monstrous 9800XT which will run any current game with
ease and will be able to handle future games. This luxury comes at the price of
$500, something many can only dream of. Well what about those who have a little
more than $200 to burn and want a card that won't give up when they try to play
Doom ]|[. This is where the 9800 Pro comes in. At $200 less than the
9800XT but $100 more than the 9600XT, is the performance worth the purchase? In
the benchmarks we will compare the 9800 Pro to the 9800XT and in the near future
will have a 9600XT and FX5700 to compare it to.
