Total cost of all equipment was just $1,850 US ($2,800
Canadian. Man, our dollar sucks!). You can save yourself $300 by not going for such good
speakers and getting rid of the GrIP controllers. Save another $100 if you don't need the
Zip drive.
The SL2YK PII-300 is according to Tweak3D really a PII-450. They say supposedly, Intel
manufactured a bunch of extra P2 450s. They didn't want to flood the market and force
themselves to drop their own CPU prices, especially since the less than P2 333s are
selling well. So, they set these P2 450s to run at 66 MHz bus instead of 100, which made
them well, P2 300s.
I've also heard that Intel has shut down their .35
micron line that use to make the PII-300s and below. However there was still a good demand
for 300 chips, so Intel decided to just make them on the .25 micron line. The same line
that makes the 450 chip, since locks on the chips would be the same. At any rate, in
the end you are really getting a PII-450 for the price of a PII-300. Have a looks at the Cupid results below to see for
yourself. Those are the same steps as a PII-450. So in reality, we're not really
overclocking at 300 to 527Mhz. We're overclocking a 450 to 527Mhz. :-)
There
are a few specific S-Spec that indicate that the P2 300 has the .25 micron and 4.4 ns
cache. They are SL2W6, SL2W7, SL2W8, SL2YK, SL2VY, and SL35V. If you come across any of
these CPU, grab them! The most common ones are the SL2W8 (OEM) and SL2YK (retail). I got
one of these chips by emailing all the local computer shops saying I was in the market for
a new computer. However I told them that it MUST have a CPU with one of the above listed
S-Spec. I got a call back from ATIC telling me they had
SL2YK in stock.
The choice of using a TNT card was really a no brainer.
It's simply the fastest 2D/3D card on the market. I've always been a 3Dfx guy but this
card has finally let me retired my Voodoos'. The icing on the cake was when I was able to
run NHL 99 at 1280x1024! A resolution that not even SLI Voodoo 2 can do.
All the other equipments works fine with the 117Mhz bus
of the Abit BX6 v2 motherboard, which I just love. This is THE overclocker's motherboard!
