Ok, so this is supposed to be a case targeted at hardcore
overclockers and tweaking enthusiasts. I mean who else would even consider a
case this loud and this big? Tweakers love to take their case apart, play around
with things, and put it back together... so why doesn't this case have
thumbscrews? I mean something as simple as that I would think would be standard
for a case of this design, especially since it's designed for people that take
their case panels off all the time.
Back to the fans for a moment, there are 8 auxiliary fans,
but unless you want to be plugging and unplugging them on the fly (not a good
idea), you're going to have to choose how many fans you want connected each time
you turn your machine on. To begin with this involves opening up the case to
fiddle with power connectors, not something that I want to do every time I want
to step down the cooling when I want a little peace and quiet. A case with this
many fans and at this price point should definitely have switches mounted
somewhere on the exterior of the case to control the fans.
With so many do-it-yourself articles on how to make switch
panels for fans, one would have thought that the people at Computers Devine
would have done something similar with this case. Sure you could do it yourself,
but if you were that inclined you probably would have bought a bare case and
done all the work with fans and painting yourself to begin with.
There are a few areas that the Green monster simply
doesn't measure up when it comes to quality. The paint job, while even in its
coverage of the case, has some sloppiness around the power and reset switches
that actually caused some problems. While they took the time to make sure the
hard drive and power lights weren't painted over, there was sufficient paint in
the cracks of the buttons to cause them to stick whenever pressed. This was
easily fixed with a bit of exacto knife trimming and scraping, but definitely an
oversight that should have been caught.
Finally, and perhaps the most glaring problem with this
case, the plastic grating for the fans. While all of the fans are mounted
internally, they don't include the external metal grating that I'm sure we've
all seen. Instead, in its place, a plastic mesh covers the inside of the holes
that the fans use. I would have like to see metal grills. Not only is this
plastic mesh *taped* onto the inside of the case, it's also taped onto what
appear to be UPS shipping labels that cover the area surrounding the holes.
