Delta 60 Fan Review

Key Features:

Okay… So, you can see that this fan looks no different than any other fan in the picture above.  The difference is in the amount of air this bad boy pushes.   This fan is a workhorse!  Its throughput is rated higher than any other 60mm fan available on the market right now.   I mean at 38CFM, this is definitely something your mother should have warned you about…   Although, I only had my Alpha P3125 to use these fans also seem to be compatible with many of the other aftermarket heatsinks out there right now from what I’ve read.  So, upgrading your current setup shouldn’t be a problem.  The fan also has a 3-pin power connector that takes advantage of RPM monitoring features of many motherboards on the market right now.    These beefy next generation fans aren’t any thicker either than my other fans.  As a matter of fact, the dimensions on this are parallel with the YS Tech 27CFM fans that were previously on my Alpha heatsink.

The Performance Factor:

Installing these on my heatsink was very simple.  It was simply a matter of switching them out with my other fans.  We already know about the CFM rating from what I’ve stated above.  The difference between the two types of fans may seem insignificant right now.  But, if we take a minute and factor in the difference of 10CFM between the two and multiply X2 you virtually have the equivalent of an extra fan in CFM rating.  This is not a bad thing at all!

I also was a bit skeptical of the CFM ratings given by the manufacturers on these fans and went about a rather unorthodox method of measurement.  Children, don’t try this at home!  I took a 13 gallon (49.2L) trash bag and calculated the cubic feet it holds through a program named “convert.exe”.  This resulted in a rating of 1.737847 cubic feet in 13 gallons.  Then take a rubber band to secure the bag on the rim of the fans making sure not to hinder airflow.  I plugged it in and “Shazam!” the bag filled up and I measured the time it took to fill the bag with air.   I did this three times with each fan and averaged the figures.  After all was said and done… The YS Tech fan rated at an average 24.5CFM and the Delta just about measured up to its rated 38CFM at 36.9CFM.

Now on to the fun stuff…  I set up the testing on “old faithful” again.   Here’s the rig and conditions:

  • Abit BX6-R2
  • P3-550 (Katmai) overclocked @ 710mhz
  • Alpha P3125
  • Ambient Room Temp 28°C

I tested both the YS Tech and Delta fans at Windows 2000 idle and after 15 minutes of both Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament for a total of 30 minutes of unbridled torture.
