Globalwin VGS08H Slot 1 Heatsink Review

Globalwin VGS08H Pentium 3/ Slot 1 Heatsink
Two Down and Three to Go!

Bottom Line/ Conclusion:

Anyway, I figured out what to do with that graphite from the heatsink! It's obviously not good for much else... Check it out

Plus, you never know when you might get stranded on an "uncharted desert isle."  Wouldn't it be nice to have that added security knowing that you can write that message in a bottle because you stuck that Globalwin heatsink graphite in your pocket after you were done scraping it off your heatsink?   I feel a helluva lot better now!  Do you?  And that leads to one more issue I'd like to share with you...   The Arctic Silver did do a great job filling the gaps in this heatsink.  But, there's only so much you can do with thermal paste.  If I were to use this heatsink as my personal heatsink some major lapping would be in store.  Obviously, the graphite needs to go from what the performance factor indicated (It's really a shame since it really conforms to the CPU core well).  It looks like Globalwin's intent was for the graphite concoction to stay on the heatsink.   Take a look at the naked contact area:

Now that's really bad juju!  Like I said in the last paragraph... I'm sure a little lapping would really increase the all-around performance by leaps and bounds.  Even another conforming thermal interface material would probably help performance.  But, nonetheless, it still performs much, much better than the Intel provided heatsink and fan that comes with Pentium 3 CPU's and that's my primary consideration in recommending this heatsink.  I definitely wouldn't have a problem using this heatsink in a dual-processor setup and in situations where space is at a premium.  Regardless, it is an efficient heatsink for moderate overclocking scenarios and especially for everyday use.

I can't let you hang!  I really want this tune to play in your head over and over again all day until you have nothing but disdain and hateful thoughts about me causing the whole thing!  It's only fair... I can't get it out of my head.  I thought I should share:

"Now this is the tale of the castaways, they're here for a long, long time, they'll have to make the best of things, it's an uphill climb. The first mate and the Skipper too, will do their very best, to make the others comfortable, in the tropic island nest. No phone, no lights no motor cars, not a single luxury, like Robinson Crusoe, as primitive as can be. So join us here each week my friends, you're sure to get a smile, from seven stranded castaways, here on "Gilligan's Isle."

It's even more abominable that I forced you to read that before I posted the "Good" and "Bad."  I'm sorry...  Not!

Good:

  • Performance much better than the Intel stock heatsink

  • Very nice and compact heatsink with dual fan performance

  • Relatively simple installation

  • Great design for cooling L2 cache on Katmai Pentium 3 CPU's

Bad:

  • Performance not quite on par with the Golden Orb

  • Stock thermal interface material blows goats

  • Globalwin could have put a little more effort into making the CPU contact area a little smoother

Rating:  8/10
