AcceleraPCI 466/128 Review

AcceleraPCI Review

The system that the AcceleraPCI was installed into had the following:

  • Pentium 150

  • Lucky Star AT Motherboard

  • 48 megs EDO RAM

  • Quantum 3.2 GIG hard drive

  • 3dfx Voodoo Banshee

  • PCI 100 Base NIC

  • Sound Blaster AWE64

  • Some cheap modem

  • 40X CD Rom

After the installation of the AcceleraPCI, things were a lot better. Quake 3 was no longer just a slide show like it was when running on the P150. It was now playable. Speed wise, it's nowhere near as fast as what it could be. This is because of the video card the system was running. With no high end video card in the system, the AcceleraPCI was never able to show how well it could really run Quake. The system would make a good Quake server. It's really not fast enough to play the newest 3D games on the market with the Voodoo Banshee.

This shows that your system is only as fast as its weakest link. In this case, the Banshee is holding the system back. Still the AcceleraPCI made a remarkable difference. Games that we wouldn't even consider running on it can now runs at an acceptable frame rate. Games that are not as video card intensive ran great. I'm sure if I were to add a PCI Voodoo 3 or a PCI TNT2, the performance would skyrocket.

I highly doubt that most people would buy the AcceleraPCI upgrade kit so they can play games. Let's face it, if you are still running a P150, games are not what you're into (at least not cutting edge 3D games). Using the AcceleraPCI with normal business applications like MS Words and Excel show great speed improvements over a P150. For all intents and purposes, it acted just like a Celeron 466, which it really is.
