As you can see... Proton didn't cut any corners when putting this kit together...   They obviously find some redeeming value in providing a quality product which is certainly a pleasant surprise when you consider how many other people are trying make it in this type of market.   So,  you may be asking yourself how this can possibly be a value considering all the kick-ass components.  Let's take an in depth look!

Price and Value Considerations:

Let me do the math for ya!  I'll break it down three ways.  First I'll give you the price for the "Little Dipper" kit from Proton.  Next I'll get a total price for all the components if purchased separately from PriceWatch.  Last but not least...   Since the kit is overclocked to 850mhz I thought it would be fair to list the current Pricewatch price for a retail boxed version of a Pentium 3 850.   All Pricewatch prices are quoted from July 6, 2000.  Here ya go:

Okay... There you have it.  I'm staring at my wallet and mumbling, "No P3 850 for me..."   If you hunt down the cheapest resources from Pricewatch you'll get a better bargain.  Hmmm... Or will you?   Here's a couple considerations:

  • With the Pricewatch CPU you're guaranteed 566mhz... Nothing more.
  • I'd rather buy all the components from one place where they've all been tested to work together.  No surprises when it comes time to install them AFTER all the items finally show up.
  • Have you ever tried to RMA something that didn't work that you bought from the vendor with lowest listed price on Pricewatch?  I did... I still haven't received my RMA # after requesting one several times over a year ago.

Nuff said!  Let's check out the installation process...
