Kodak DC-215 Digital Camera Review

You can see from the pictures above, that it's a reasonably compact camera. The back panel LCD viewer is reasonably bright with no dead pixels (rare in LCD) that I can determine. The LCD does become difficult to view in bright sunlight, which is typical of LCD's. The optical viewfinder is well done, and is image-accurate, meaning what you see through the optical viewfinder is what the final image capture will be, which is an added plus among cameras in this price range.

The serial interface is, in a word, painful! After installing the twain driver and attempting to download a ~400kb jpeg from the camera, I realized that the minute-per-picture downloads just had to go. A quick trip to Best Buy, and a Sandisk ImageMateUSB Card reader was had, eliminating that problem. With the card reader, the cards mount as a removable drive, and transferring pictures is just like transferring any file, and A LOT faster than the lame serial interface. (note: Kodak sells a "Millennium" Edition of this camera, that's often priced the same as the regular. Comes with an 8MB card and a USB card reader). The camera uses 4-AA batteries, intelligently housed in a horizontal lock-in tray in the bottom of the camera, helping to evenly distribute the weight of the batteries. Plan on opening this door alot to replace batteries, unless you get smart and go buy some NiMH rechargables, as this camera, like many of it's digital breathren, eats batteries for breakfast. You can get longer shoot time out of an expensive set of Lithium ION disposables (~200 shots here) compared to NiMH rechargeables (~120), but you'll go broke buying batteries that way. Don't even think Duracell or Energizer.

It does have a true 2x optical Zoom, whereas many cameras in this price range use "digital" zoom, which is basically just a supersampling algorithm. It has two standard resolution modes, 1152x864 which is good enough for 4x6 or 5x7 photo quality prints, and 640x480 which is an ideal mode for web pictures. It does have a fixed focus lens and this is apparent from looking at some of the picture examples below.
