Abit SE6 Motherboard Review

System Setup:

  • Celeron II 566@876 MHz  (103 MHz FSB)... with an Alpha of course

  • 128 MB Micron PC-133 RAM

  • 16X DVD

  • 40 Gig Maxtor ATA66 HD

  • Geforce 2 GTS

  • Aureal A3D card

  • Windows Me

Overclocking:

While this is more dependent on the CPU than on the motherboard or chipset, some mention should be made of the overclocking potential of the SE6.  We all know that ABIT loves to cater to overclockers and always provides just about everything that an overclocker could need on its motherboards, the SE6 is no exception.

Voltage Options:  1.30-1.85V (0.05V increments)

FSB Options:  66 / 68 / 70 / 72 / 75 / 77 / 83 / 90 / 100 / 103 / 112 / 115 / 120 / 125 / 128 / 130 / 133 / 137 / 140 / 145 / 150 / 153

The BIOS automatically sets the dividers for AGP 1/2 or 2/3 depending on the front side bus speed selected so you don't have to worry about frying your fancy video card.  Really what more can you ask for?  How about more FSB selection between 103Mhz to 112Mhz.

The Celeron 566 has proven to be a very overclockable chip. This unit runs 100% stable at 900Mhz. The only problem is to run at the speed requires a front side bus speed of 106Mhz. This is a bus speed available from the Abit BX-133 motherboard but it is not available in the SE6. As such, we had to make due with the 103Mhz bus "just" 875Mhz. The Celeron 566 would not run at 112Mhz no matter how much voltage was used. However, it was able to run at 875Mhz using stock voltage. A testament to the stability of the motherboard.  It's a same Abit couldn't put the same great Softmenu III that was used in the BX-133 into the SE6.
