Abit VT6X4 Motherboard Review

P4200004.jpg (31702 bytes)
Now that's what I call cutting it close!

Installation of the VT6X4 went off without a single hitch. Being a small motherboard, it was really easy to work it. I really like the placement of the fan connectors. There are three connectors all together. Two place next to each other by the DIMM slots and one by the power connections. There is good space between the Slot 1 rail and the DIMM slots. I was able to put my Slot 1 P3-550E on the huge Global Win VOS32 and just clear the first DIMM slot by 1 mm.

The placement of the IDE connectors are nice and high. I like that a lot. The ATX power connector is behind the Slot 1 rails where it belongs. Rounding out the layout are five PCI slots, 2 ISA slots and AGP slot. I filled the AGP slot with an Elsa Gladiac, the PCI slot held an Aureal Super Quad 3D sound card and a 100 base NIC. This leaves me three PCI slot for future expansion.

In the above picture you can see all the nicely colored I/O ports. Like all new motherboards, the Abit VT6X4 meets PC99 specs. You can also see the connectors for the on board sound card. While there are some motherboards with good on board sound, this is not one of them.

Abit motherboards are all about overclocking and the VT6X4 doesn't disappoint in that department. This motherboard is super stable. I had no problems running it on the 150Mhz front side bus. It was almost too easy. I tried both Corsair PC-133 and Micron PC-133 SDRAM  on it and both had no problem at 150Mhz. By comparison, the Micron PC-133 doesn't work at 150Mhz on the Tyan 1854 motherboard.
