AOpen 1640 16X DVD ROM Review

The SiSoftSandra Drive index scores speak for themselves, and corroborate the results from the above tests. Bottom line: The Aopen is ONE FAST DRIVE.

Conclusions:

PC-DVD drives have suffered for quite a while from "chicken-before-the-egg" syndrome. Right now, apart from DVD movies, there hasn't been much of a reason to consider one for your PC. The tradeoffs in CD read speed and overall cost have certainly been detractors for DVD drives in mainstream PC's. With speeds like these, and at a price barely over $100 if you look around a bit, Aopen is certainly doing their part in bringing no-compromise DVD performance to market at a decent price. We've seen this year DVD drives become more commonplace in standard retail PC's, and in the PC's of do-it-yourself'ers. With an excellent drive like the Aopen DVD1640 Pro, this trend will certainly continue!!

Pros:

  • Fastest PC-DVD drive on the market

  • No compromises CD-ROM read performance

  • Excellent price/performance ratio

  • PowerDVD v2.55 Software DVD player (my personal favorite among SoftDVD)

Cons:

  • NONE!

Rating: 9.5/10
