D-Link DMP-100  MP3 Player Review

The earphones are not the most comfortable units I've ever tried but it's not bad. They didn't fit my ears very well and I find myself removing them every 15 minute or so. I'm one of those people who don't like things stuck in their ears. I would have like to see a normal set of headphones instead of these earphones. The sound quality from them is not too bad but it's also not too good either. You can use the equalizer to adjust the sound to your taste.

The only thing I dislike about the DMP-100 is that the unit only has 32 megs of memory. That means I run out of songs during my 1.5 to 2 hour workouts and have to repeat some. Yes you can expand the memory of the unit using SmartMedia cards. I added a 32 meg SmartMedia card to the unit and that extended my musical enjoyment. However, SmartMedia is very expensive. A 32 Meg card will set you back $80.

I really enjoy using the DMP-100. It was the perfect thing to take with me for my workouts at Fitness World. Because there are no moving parts I don't have to worry about the music skipping on me while I'm on the treadmill. The unit is so light that I hardly notice I'm running with it. It sure has made my workouts go by a lot faster.

The see-though casing was always a topic of discussion whenever someone saw the DMP-100. Some people loved it, some people hated it. For those who don't like to see inside the DMP-100, D-Link does make a normal unit with a black casing.

Overall, I found the DMP-100 quite nice. It's main drawback is the lack of memory. However that can be fix with the addition of SmartMedia cards. While D-Links sells the DMP-100 for $179 at their online store, you can pick one up from online vendors for as low as $149 (Go here to check it out). That's a really good price and well worth it if you want to play music and record voice.

The Goods

  • Can record voice as well as play MP3s

  • Easy to learn software

  • Cool casing

  • Good price

The Bads

  • Use of the printer port to transfer MP3 is way slower than USB port

Rating: 8/10
