Novasonic MP3/CD Player Review

Well, hmm...Looks just like a portable CD player doesn't
it? :) Yet this portable CD player can also play MP3's burnt to standard CD-R or
CD-RW discs (up to 177 MP3's). You'll also notice the big "Lenoxx" logo on the
top. Lenoxx? I thought this was Novasonic? In actuality, there is an Australian
company also selling these units. Both Datawalker and Novasonic are using the
same overseas manufacturing company to make these, and according to Novasonic,
the units with their company logo haven't arrived yet. At any rate, back to the
article.
The MP3's themselves can be arranged in up to eight
subdirectories (including the root directory as one of them) to help organize
the collection. The importance of this will become apparent later on in the
article. The unit also has the capability to record audio, up to 500 seconds
worth. This seems to be a common "thrown in" feature with many MP3 players,
that's easy to implement in a players design and is a nice little bonus,
although for most people, probably not important. The audio quality is adequate
for voice dictation basically, and you have to supply your own microphone.
Sounds good so far, but what's "in the box?"

Included in the package is the player, a set of inexpensive and adequate sounding (if slightly uncomfortable for my ears) earbud headphones, a line-out stereo cord, a small protective cloth sleeve, 2-1.5v AA NiMH rechargeable batteries, and an AC Power brick, for playing and charging. The inclusion of rechargeable batteries is a nice touch here, as "toys" like this are always hungry for batteries. The fact that the batteries charge in the player, even while playing, is also a nice and thoughtful touch. The batteries themselves seem to be good for 6-8 hours of playback from my testing, which isn't bad for just 2 NiMH batteries.
