Novasonic MP3/CD Player Review

Well, this is a new product category, so there is a wart or two. The biggest, really the only drawback I can see, is in managing full CD's. The first CD I burnt had 140 songs, all in the root directory. With nothing but currently playing track number to go by managing a large MP3 collection on one disk can be challenging without the use of directories.

Playback quality is certainly more than adequate, it thoughtfully includes NiMH batteries and a charger, and can play 10 times the songs the average MP3 player can. It's larger than most MP3 players on the market so it's not shirt-pocketable, but people don't seem to mind carrying around portable CD players, and this player is no larger than most of those.

There are apparently other units of this type in the works, but so far none are shipping (Pine & Panasonic). Bottom line, is if you are an MP3 enthusiast who already owns a CD-R/RW drive (as many do) I see no reason to consider one of the expensive to upgrade Compact Flash based units. For me, this is exactly the type of solution I was looking for. I think you'll be pleased with the Novasonic Portable MP3/CD Player. I know I am.

Pros:

  • Can playback up to 177 MP3's (standard and VBR up to 224kbps) on one CD

  • 60 second of ESP (Electronic Skip Protection)

  • 500 second audio recording function

  • Rechargeable batteries and charger included

  • Price comparable to many flash memory based players, but with MUCH MORE playback capacity

Cons:

  • No ID3 tag support for song name display.

Rating: 9/10
