Sony CRX140E CD Writer Review

Price: $188.95
Manufacturer: Sony

The Sony CRX140E is an 8X CD writer from  the people who invented the CD ROM. Sony is well known in the recording media. Besides co-inventing the CD and DVD format, Sony was also the company that try to tell us that Beta was better than VHS. Well, two out of three is not bad. :)

The Sony CRX140E we had for testing came in a plain brown box. Inside, you'll find the CD writer, a CD-R disc, a CD ReWritable disc, a manual, a quick start guide, warranty card, software CD and an application for a Sony Visa (I'm sure we all need one of those).

I personally love CD Writers. They're a great way to back up large files and computer games. With each disk able to hold 650 Megs of data, I can pretty much back up all my important stuff onto one CD. One CD-R can hold up to 74 minutes of music or up to 160 average length MP3s. That should ensure a no repeat: work day.

The new Sony CRX140E can burn a CD 8 times faster than my original burner, an HP 1X unit. At just $189, the Sony CRX140E offers great performance and value in an easy-to-install internal IDE drive.  It's a nice easy way to save data, photos, music, etc.. The Sony CRX140E has a fast 8x Write, 4x ReWrite and 32x Read speed. This ranks it among the fastest CD Writers on the market. Some of the highlights of this CD burner include:

  • High Performance CD Recorder Internal Upgrade Kit
  • 8X Recording (CD-R), 4X Recording (CD-RW), 32X Reading (Max.)
  • SCSI-2 Interface for High Performance
  • Records All Popular CD Formats
  • Includes CD Complete Pro™ Software Suite

The CRX140E is a very complete recording system. Everything you need to create your own CD is included. Well, everything but the CD Label creator, which is available with the HP 9100. Software wise, you get a copy of Adaptec Direct CD, Adaptec Easy CD Creator. These programs allow you to record pretty much anything you want, including turning your MP3 to CD music format for playing in your car.
