Hot on the heels of Plextor's
new 16/10/40A is Yamaha with its new CRW2100EZ. Offering 16X write, 10X rewrite
and 40X read, the CRW2100EZ would seems to match the Plextor in speed but offers
a much better bundle of goodies, among them the Neato CD Labeling kit and Adobe
PhotoDeluxe.
While the Plextor makes use of
Sanyo's Burn Proof Technology, Yamaha uses their own "Waste-Proof Write
Strategy". This exclusive write strategy
maximizes stability of the recording environment by combining a large buffer
memory (8 Megs in this case), CAV writing support for on-the-fly data backup,
and specific fine-tunings to the recording software, resulting in elimination of
buffer underruns and waste of media. That's the theory. In real life,
Waste-Proof is no match for Burn Proof as the Yamaha drive produced its fair
share of coasters.
Feature wise,
the CRW2100EZ is as complete as it comes. Everything you need to create your own
CDs is here, including a kit for making the CD label. Software wise, you get
Adaptec Easy CD Creator, Adaptec Direct CD, Adaptec Toast for you Mac addicts,
Adobe PhotoDeluxe and Adobe ActiveShare. It seems like nearly every CD writer
comes with Easy CD Creator. Whiles it's a nice program I would like to see it
ditched for a more trouble free and feature laden application, like Nero 5.
