The Virtual Server page, is where you can setup and map
port access if you need to run server services on machines on the LAN that you
want to appear visible on the internet (for example FTP). The radio type scroll
box at the bottom has common service defaults built in for easy setup (AUTH,
DNS, FTP, POP3, SMTP, Telnet, and WEB).
The Special Applications page is where you can map
custom inbound and outbound ports for certain services that may require them. A
few common services (Dialpad, BattleNet, Quicktime4, MSN Gaming Zone, ICU II)
are included as helpful defaults. Any programs that require specific port
assignments can be set up here. You would of course need to contact the software
author for the information needed to get their application to work through a
firewall. Still, the setup here is simple enough.
In the Access control section, you can block or allow
specific or ranges of ports from specific or ranges of IP's on the LAN, allowing
a great deal of flexibility in controlling the types and levels of
access/security, available to different machines on the network.
