Asus V6800 Review

To overclock the Asus 6800, I used Powerstrip by EnTech (available at the download page). Powerstrip allows you to overclock the 6800 as high as 200Mhz core and 400Mhz memory. To help keep the card cool, I added a new Global Win card cooler to the Asus V6800.

Global Win Card Cooler

The Global Win card cooler is made up of two YS Tech fans. Together they blow over 50 cubic feet of air per minute over the video card. With the help of the Global Win card cooler, I was able to overclock the V6800 to 155Mhz core and 350Mhz memory. I'm sure I can get higher if I were to add a Mellenger Video Card Cooling Kit to it. Adding a cooling kit would be very easy to do. Asus video cards seem made for overclocking. The factory heatsink is not glued to the video chip. Removing the heatsink is as simple as pushing out 2 clips.

Overclocked Benchmark Scores

Benchmark Type 120/300 155/350

Quake Crusher Demo 1024x768 103.5 125.7
Quake Crusher Demo 1600x1200 48.9 61.5

Quake 3 Dem0001 1600x1200 38.7 48.4
Quake 3 Dem0002 800x600 122.7 122.9
Quake 3 Dem0002 1024x768 91.5 110.2
Quake 3 Dem0002 1600x1200 39.9 49.7
Unreal Timedemo 800x600 68.9 68.9
Unreal Timedemo 1024x768 63.9 66.6
Unreal Timedemo 1600x1200 43.2 48.9
3D Mark 99 7028 7051
3D Mark 2000 4675 5342

Overclocking the V6800 doesn't give much perfomance increase at lower resolutions, but it really helps a lot when the resolutions starts reaching for the stars. Quake 3 is completely payable at 1600x1200 resolution! While I didn't have a UT timedemo, I found UT would run flawlessly at 1600x1200x32 bit color. The frame counter rarely went  below 50fps.

Overclock Benchmark 16 bit vs 32 bit

Benchmark Type 16 bit 32 bit
Quake 3 Dem0001 800x600 122.9 119.8
Quake 3 Dem0001 1024x768 108.9 91.6
Quake 3 Dem0001 1600x1200 48.4 38.7
Quake 3 Dem0002 800x600 122.9 122.7
Quake 3 Dem0002 1024x768 110.2 91.5
Quake 3 Dem0002 1600x1200 49.7 39.9

Overclocking the V6800 really helps when going to super high resolution and 32 bit color. At stock speed, Quake 3 wasn't that great at 1600x1200. However, with card running at 155/350, it's not too bad.
