Asus V6800 Review

If you have a look at my review of the Asus V6600 Pure, you will notice that the 16 bit performance is nearly the same as the Asus 6800. However step the color depth up to 32 bit and the DDR powered Asus V6800 takes over. Clearly 32 bit and ultra high resolution gaming is where the Asus V6800 performs best. Even  running Quake 3 at 1600x1200x32 bit, frame rate rarely drop below 30 frames per second.

For the person who just wants speed and great visual quality without any fancy TV out, video in, 3D glasses or any of that other stuff, the Asus V6800 is as good as it gets. If you want all the toys then you can pay a little more and get the V6800 Deluxe. The Asus V6800 scales very well with the CPU. The  faster the CPU, the faster the V6800. The card is quite a bit faster than the Creative Annihilator running on a Celeron 605. It's too bad I don't have any slow computers to test the 6800 on. My guess would be the Geforce cards needs fast CPUs to get the most out of them.

If you have a fast computer system, I can highly recommend the Asus V6800. It's simply the fastest video card I've ever tested. Unlike the Creative Annihilator Pro I tested, the Asus V6800 had no problems working with my Asus K7M motherboard. This is not surprising of course, considering both products are made by Asus. At a street price of $275, it's one of the more expensive video cards on the market but It's worth it if you want the best game performance possible. You have not really seen Quake 3 until you run it at 1600x1200 resolution on a 21" monitor. Railing someone on the space maps without zooming can put a really big smile on your face. The Asus 6800 can do that for you.

With all that said, if it was up to me, I would spend the extra few bucks and get the Geforce V6800 Deluxe. For an extra $25 over the cost of the V6800, you get TV out, Video in, and 3D glasses. Not a bad deal at all.
