Creative Annihilator 2 Review

If you're looking for speed, you came to the right place with the Creative Annihilator 2. For the person who wants speed and great visual quality without any fancy TV out, video in, 3D glasses, or their video card to make coffee, the Creative Annihilator 2 is as good as it gets. This card is super fast. However you won't really notice it until you start running your games at ultra high resolutions.

Those who decided to wait for the price of GeForce2 cards to come down got their wish. The Annihilator 2 is the less expensive GeForce2 card to hit the market. Still at $299 (you can find it for less here), it's not cheap. Owners of GeForce 256 cards may want to hold out until the next generation of video cards is introduced. The performance advantage of the GTS over a standard GeForce really only shows up at higher end resolutions. If you don't run, or if your monitor can't run, at this resolution then it doesn't make sense to buy a card that your monitor can't handle.

The current reference 5.22 drivers supports FSAA. While this is a nice feature to have I found the performance hit to be too great to use. Given a choice between running 1600x1200 without FSAA  or 800x600 with FSAA, I take 1600x1200 any day. Also the implementation of FSAA by nVidia is not as well done as 3dfx.

I found the Annihilator to be highly overclockable. The card runs rock stable at 235Mhz core and 375Mhz memory with just the addition of The Card Cooler. Adding in AMK RAM Sinks and Core Sink is sure to improve that even more.

I really like the Creative Annihilator 2. This is among the fastest video card The Tech Zone has ever tested. This is best $299 video card we've tested. But remember, a video card is all you get. There are no TV/Video out, DVI Out, 3D Glasses, or game bundle. Then again, none of that is really needed.

The Goods

  • Really really fast

  • It's a GeForce card

  • Very overclockable
