Hercules 3D Prophet II Review

Seeing how the 64 Meg 3D Prophet runs stock at 220/360 with no problems what  so ever, I was really looking forward to overclocking it. Like I wrote on the last page I was able to overclock the card all the way to 250Mhz core and 400Mhz memory. However, it wasn't 100% stable at that speed. There were some artifacts here and there so I decided to see if I could get it running 100% stable.

The first thing I did was remove the heatsink off the GTS chip. You will see a heatsink pad used as interface material between the sink and the chip. I removed the pad with an ink knife and replaced it with high quality heatsink compound. This allowed for much better heat transfer than what the heatsink pad could do. I then added a little cut up AMK RAM Sink on the other side of the core. The sink was attached using Thermal tape.

To make sure all the RAM sinks stay nice and cool, I  added a ball bearing card cooler from The Card Cooler. The card cooler was perfect for the job since it blows most of its air on the bottom of the card. Blowing at the top of the card is not as important since there is no RAM up there. You can see the little GTS core sink in the above photo.

With these little changes the 3D Prophet II now runs 100% stable at 250Mhz core and 400Mhz memory. I may replace the factory RAM sinks with AMK RAM Sinks at a later date to see if it will go higher. With the card at 250/400, it went on to beat every Tech Zone benchmark on the books,  including an amazing 6594 score on 3D Mark 2000!
