Creative Labs : 3D Blaster Savage4
Review
Conclusion
Most people probably will not agree with me
for saying this but the 3Dblaster Savage4 is a great card. It has both value for money and
features in the same package. It comes with Creative's excellent tech support (which can
be in the form of their website, newsgroup, telephone tech support etc.), which has been
very helpful. It also comes with the promise of the unified drivers which will help open a
new door for most current games and some games to come (like Diablo II). Even though
Creative may have decided to terminate producing Savage4 based cards it is unlikely that
the driver development will stop.
By looking at the benchmarks you can see that
the 3Dblaster Savage4's playable resolutions are limited to 1024x768, which is a result of
the low fillrate that is in turn dependent on the Core speed. But this card was targeted
at people who didn't want to throw too much money into a bigger monitor, or a fast CPU or
into a TNT2 Ultra, which would eventually be redundant when the likes of the NV10 are
released. This card was meant for people like me, people who have average CPU's, 15"
monitors and don't want to spend 250US$ on a 3d accelerator. Not all of us can afford a
system like Project 620.
If you were to analyze comparative benchmarks
you would see that the Savage4's generaly maintain the fastest frame-rates in 640x480,
which in a deathmatching context seems ideal.
If you don't have an ultra fast CPU and don't
intend on buying one in the near future, or if you just want to wait in this transitional
period until the big boys (3dfx Rampage/Napalm, nVIDIA NV10, S3 GX4) come and want a
decent 3D accelerator, go out and buy one now because I doubt there will be many
3DBlasters remaining in the near future. With that said the Creative Labs 3DBlaster
Savage4 gets an 8 out of 10 rating.
