Stupid GPS Navigation

by John Chow on March 5, 2011

So I’m testing out the new Garmin nüvi 3790LMT GPS in Hawaii. What better place to test a GPS than in Hawaii? The 3790 is the world’s thinnest GPS – it looks a lot like a big iPhone 4. The unit’s performance so far has been good but there are some glitches in its navigation. More than once, it told me to take an off ramp only to put me back on the next on ramp to the same highway. And then there was this little bundler.

Stupid Garmin GPS

Look for a full review of the Garmin nüvi 3790LMT soon.

They are not always blunders, if you have selected FAST as your method of transport, it can do this as ‘IT’ thinks this is faster than the straight forward direction

I bet you’re right. Going the purple route results in potentially no traffic lights, whereas going straight ahead might have a light at Williams, Hunter, and Kamuela.

I guess GPS has teamed up with the oil companies. Instead of traversing a straight line, it suggests a longer path which obviously consumes more fuel. =p

Big John Chow, how stupid are you? You obviously had the device set on the scenic route

Perhaps the GPS Navigator knows something… like there’s a roadblock between Karmuela and Hunter. And of course there are those who will just follow whatever direction they are told to go, whether it’ll get them where they want to go or not.

That looks like a bug in the GPS software.

May be if you go straight, you’ll get stuck in traffic. May be there has been a diversion. There can be many reasons !! How can you be sure it isn’t working?

I live in Shanghai and the worst experiences I made with cab drivers and other amateurs were those with GPS involved. Chinese love high tech stuff and I think they got feelings for their GPS. They follow unquestioned the synthetic voice. Shanghai is not really widely spread and even me got after 6 years being around got a certain orientation without being able reading street signs. Driving in an opposite direction or round about tours just happened with those individuals who got lost relying on GPS. Don’t ask me why – it is magic. There are films about taxi drivers. If I ever will write a story I will show a totally confused driver getting lost in his own neighbor hood using a GPS not matter how high it is developed.
