TrendNet TEW-637AP Wireless Easy-N-Upgrader Review

TrendNet Router

I’ve covered a couple of TrendNet Wireless-N routers here in the past and each one seemed to improve on its predecessor just a little. The interesting thing is that for this time around, TrendNet didn’t decide to send us a Wireless N router, per se. Instead, they sent us the TrendNet TEW-637AP Wireless Easy-N-Upgrader. What the heck is a Wireless Easy-N-Upgrader?

In a nutshell, it’s basically just a wireless access point that connects to your existing 802.11b/g router. The connection to your existing router is not wireless; instead, TrendNet provides you with a short Ethernet cable. The idea, I guess, is that you can effectively keep your existing wireless settings on your existing wireless modem, while being able to blanket the same area in a sea of high-speed 802.11n goodness. You upgrade to wireless-N without having to replace your existing router.

As you already know, there are two key advantages to jumping onto the Wireless-N bandwagon. First, you are afforded up to 12x the speed of 802.11g. Second, the range afforded by the TrendNet TEW-637AP 300Mbps Wireless Easy-N-Upgrader is said to be up to four times that of Wireless-G. Whether the increased speed and expanded range is worth your hard-earned money is up to you.
