For the pass few years, the name Voodoo and
3Dfx has meant the best and fastest in 3D. If you were a hard core gamer you had
a 3Dfx Voodoo card. There was no second choice. The power of the first Voodoo 1
blew the competition away. Voodoo 2 were so far above everything else, it seems
like nothing could touch it, until the TNT came alone.
Following the success of the Voodoo 1 and
Voodoo 2, 3Dfx now brings us Voodoo 3. Currently there are 2 models on the
market. The Voodoo 3 2000 I have here for testing and the Voodoo 3 3000 I'll be
getting later. The difference between the 2 cards are clock speed, game bundle
and TV out support. The 2000 runs at 142Mhz while the 3000 runs at 166Mhz. The
3000 also has a bigger heatsink to handle the speed. As for games, the Voodoo 3
2000 doesn't come with any full games, just a bunch of game demos. There is no
TV out support with the Voodoo 3 2000. I don't really miss this feature because
I don't play games on the TV, unless it's my N64.
With a street price of just $129, the Voodoo
3 2000 could very well be the biggest bang for the buck video card out there. I
decided to test this card and see how it performs against the Viper 550 TNT. Why
am I comparing a V3 against a TNT? Shouldn't I be comparing it the TNT 2? Well,
no. There are 2 main reasons for this. The first and most important being that
the TNT 2 is not available yet. The second is the price. At just $129, the
Voodoo 3 2000 is in the same price range as the Viper 550 TNT. How do the 2
stack up? Let's find out.
