3dfx Voodoo 3 2000 Video Card Review

Voodoo 3 2000 Benchmark

I tested the Voodoo 3 2000 on a PII-300, 450 and 527Mhz computer with the following equipment:

  • Intel PII-300 to 527

  • Abit BX6 v2 Motherboard

  • In Win 24" ATX Case With 230 Watts PS

  • 128 Megs 7ns SDRAM

  • BTC 40X CD Rom

  • Seagate Medalist Pro 6.5 Gig 7200RPM Hard Drive

  • Sound Blaster Live Value

  • Acer PCI modem

  • Acer PCI Network card

  • Acer 40X CD ROM

I used Quake 2 and 3D Mark 99 Max as the benchmarks. All tests were run 3 times and the average score is shown. All drivers were the latest ones from the manufacturers. The Voodoo 3 2000 was left at it's rated 143Mhz clock (overclock speed will be at a later date). The Viper 550 TNT was clocked to 105/115. Vsync was turned off. No tweaks or special cfg files were used. 3D Mark 99 Max was ran at 800x600, 16 bit color, 16 bit Z-Buffer, Triple Frame Buffer.

Pentium II 300 Results

Benchmark Type Voodoo 3 2000 Viper 550 TNT
Quake 2 Demo1 800x600 72.9 55.2
Quake 2 Demo1 1024x768 62.0 43.5
Quake 2 Demo1 1600x1200 29.2 19.8
Quake 2 Crusher 800x600 32.7 34.3
Quake 2 Crusher 1024x768 32.7 32.0
Quake 2 Crusher 1600x1200 14.4 16.2
3D Mark 99 Max 800x600 2561 2569

There was no doubt that the Voodoo 3 2000 would be a fast card. Even on a low end PII-300 it run Quake 2 at over 60 frames per second at 1024x768. However, as the game use more textures, as is the case with the Quake 2 crusher demo, the Viper 550 edges out the Voodoo 3 2000. This is due to the lack of AGP texture support, something that the feature pack Viper 550 has. The 3D Mark 99 scores are close enough to be consider a wash.

Pentium II 450 Results

Benchmark Type Voodoo 3 2000 Viper 550 TNT
Quake 2 Demo1 800x600 95.3 68.4
Quake 2 Demo1 1024x768 65.7 45.9
Quake 2 Demo1 1600x1200 29.3 20.1
Quake 2 Crusher 800x600 48.7 50.6
Quake 2 Crusher 1024x768 40.9 36.9
Quake 2 Crusher 1600x1200 16.4 17.2
3D Mark 99 Max 800x600 3872 3852

Moving up the CPU speed shows that the Voodoo 3 2000 scales very well. All the scores took a nice jump. Again, the Viper 550 was able to beat the Voodoo 3 2000 the Quake 2 Crusher demo (except for the 1024x768 resolution) and in 3D Mark 99 Max.

Pentium II 527 Results

Benchmark Type Voodoo 3 2000 Viper 550 TNT
Quake 2 Demo1 800x600 98.7 70.6
Quake 2 Demo1 1024x768 65.8 46.3
Quake 2 Demo1 1600x1200 29.3 20.2
Quake 2 Crusher 800x600 55.3 54.0
Quake 2 Crusher 1024x768 42.4 38.0
Quake 2 Crusher 1600x1200 17.0 17.3
3D Mark 99 Max 800x600 4520 4468

Not much of increase as CPU speed was moved to 527Mhz. We are pretty much at the fill rate limits of both cards. The Voodoo 3 2000 edge out the Viper 550 in almost every test at this level because the card scales higher.
